A Bold New World When I was small, eight or so, I dreamt of catching all the fireflies in the field next to my house. I wanted to use them to light my room. I had figured out that if I put as many of them as possible in my closet at night when I needed light in my room I would just open the close and voila there would be light. But alas …I could never catch enough fireflies. And I also bean to worry that in my quest for success I might decimate the entire world population of fireflies. So much for Free Light! I childhood fantasy without doubt….but not without merit I might add. Now this is exactly what is possible. Today it is not only possible but happening all around us and may even be essential for human and social evolution. It is possible to collect these points of light and put them in a place where not only may I open this door and become enlightened, but we can capture an infinite number of fireflies. These points of light have become so ubiquitous as to become, what Larry Lessig calls, non rivalous resources. These treasures may not be reduced by infinite use. This is Open Source!
